WHY SARBANES-OXLEY?
The Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) was passed by Congress in 2002
to establish strict standards for the reporting, accounting and auditing
of the financial and IT operations of publicly-held corporations. It establishes
strict standards governing everything from the qualifications of the auditors
to the specific procedures, documentation and accountability standards
that must be met during the audit process.
Professionals from various government agencies, municipalities, industry
trade groups and manufacturers have voiced concerns over the lack of any
formal accreditation policies to address the growing number of claims
dealing with sustainable performance and environmental benefits. A representative
of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently commented that “All
products are green. Until we have standards in place that define what
is considered green, anything can be claimed.”
Even though our work with various corporations, products and spectator
events has little to do with Information Technology or balance sheets,
AmeriGreen Strategies has chosen to embrace the internationally accepted
SOX reporting, monitoring and assessment protocols and adapt them to the
green environment in order to provide a single standard basis for objective
evaluation.
We couple these auditing and reporting methods to equally-established
industry sustainability standards, such as those developed by the American
Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and the National Institute of
Standards and Technology (NIST), and this forms the basis for our methodology.
